description abstractA description is given of a primitive equation model designed specifically for extended operational prediction in the Southern Hemisphere. The model closely resembles in dynamical and physical aspects the well-known Smagorinsky general circulation formulation. In addition to improved initialization procedures, important modifications have been made to this original formulation in order to ensure compatibility with operational requirements. Simulated operational trials with the model indicate considerable promise especially in regard to the predicted intensity of synoptic systems and associated large-scale rainfall distributions.
