description abstractFive filtered models, including two that are intermediate between the balanced and the primitive equations, are studied using actual weather data. The iterative method of solution works well in most cases. The two more general models are solved by nonlinear iterations that possess some convergence problems. These problems grow significantly as the grid resolution increases. Results indicate that these general models resolve small-scale structures better than the simpler ones do, mainly bemuse the general models give a more accurate description of horizontal divergence.
