description abstractAn unusual series of radar photographs was encountered in a major rainstorm in Venezuela in 1972. An elongated hole in the S-band radar presentation worked its way from the echo edge toward the center, then became an island and finally disappeared after one hour. The suggested mechanism for this event is a vertical wave motion superimposed on a rotating mesoscale cyclone.
