description abstractThe barotropic vorticity equation and zonal kinetic energy equation are used to derive a formula expressing the transport of relative angular momentum by large-scale transient eddies in terms of other mean zonally averaged variables. To test the formula, computations are made using the observed winter and summer zonal average conditions. Generally good agreement is found between the calculated and observed momentum transport.
