description abstractOne month of daily spherical harmonic expansions of 500-mb. height in the Northern Hemisphere were studied. The movements of the waves are compared with the Rossby-Haurwitz wave speeds computed from the zonal geostrophic wind profile. Systematic differences between the observed and theoretical wave speeds are found.
