description abstractA simplified model of the rainfall mechanism is used as a guide in developing a statistical formula, with readily measured variables as arguments, for forecasting precipitation amounts in winter at Washington, D. C. The skill of the forecasting method is tested on independent data and for snow cases. To simplify computations involved in using the formula, a nomograph is devised. Suggestions are given for further work on the method.
