description abstractThe information content of ground-based measurements of atmospheric microwave radiance in the 50?60 GHz band was studied, using a formulation due to Twomey. Weighting functions for ground-based microwave radiometry were constructed corresponding to measurements at various frequencies, and various elevation angles. Covariance matrices were computed for several sets of such weighting functions, and their eigenvalues were examined to estimate the degree of redundancy in the measurements.
