description abstractThis paper evaluates the rainfall conditions of 1994 in the West African Sahel. This analysis confirms that the year was relatively wet in the Sahel. The strongest positive anomalies occurred in the central Sahel and during the months of August, September, and October. Conditions in the western Sahel were, as a whole, relatively dry. This year was the wettest for the region as a whole since 1969. Nevertheless, rainfall barely exceeded the long-term mean and was still slightly subnormal in the southern Sahel (i.e., the Soudan zone).
