description abstractRecent work has shown that the linear, wind-forced quasi-geostrophic motion of stratified water over shelf topography can be described by a sum of modes, the amplitude of each of these modes satisfying a forced, first-order wave equation. The analysis presented suggests that this forced wave equation can qualitatively explain a wide range of observational and numerical results.
