description abstractMicrostructure is examined in 61 temperature-depth profiles which were obtained at one location in a fresh water lake. Over the 12 hr of observation, specific features of the microstructure are continuous, but increase in temperature and move up the water column. This temporal behavior is explained by the hypothesis that the microstructure is created by progressive internal waves in which the phase velocity is nearly vertical.
