description abstractAn air-sea interaction research program (STREX) has been carried out in the Gulf of Alaska to investigate characteristics of the boundary layers of the atmosphere and ocean in middle-latitude storms. Observations were made by ships, aircraft, satellites, and buoys in 10 storms. This paper summarizes the objectives and the observations obtained in STREX, and identifies some of the research problems being studied by meteorologists and oceanographers who participated in the program.
