description abstractA theoretical three-layer model for tropospheric gravity waves with discontinuous vertical profiles of both wind and temperature is examined. The asymmetry of the model increases the difficulty in solving the equations but allows a more accurate simulation of the real atmosphere. The effects of wind and temperature discontinuities on the dynamic stability of the model are found by solving numerically the algebraic eigenvalue equation. The results are compared with previous models and reveal how the domain of unstable wavelengths is modified when asymmetrical conditions are considered.
