description abstractAn investigation is made to determine the effects of vertical shear on regular neutral mode Rossby solitons for application to planetary atmospheres. The basic zonal flow consists of two fluid layers on a ?plane, each with different mean horizontal velocity profiles. For a selected weak vertical shear the results indicate similar, but latitudinally shifted, wave patterns in each layer. An order one vertical shear in the same model gives rise to a very restricted flow regime for these regular neutral modes.
