description abstractStudy of frozen drops preserved as hailstone embryos shows that breaking during freezing is fairly common. Drops in clouds tumble and grow by accretion as they freeze. Both effects are expected to favor shattering, but neither has been simulated properly in laboratory studies of possible ice multiplication.
