description abstractA direct method is described for the numerical solution of the spherical harmonies approximation to the equation of transfer for plane-parallel atmospheric models with arbitrary nonhomogeneities in the vertical direction, and with highly anisotropic but axially symmetric phase functions. Representative results are presented for the monochromatic diffuse fluxes, and for the azimuth-independent component of the intensity of the radiation emerging from eight different atmospheric models.
