description abstractSubject to various approximations, a system of three simultaneous partial differential equations is derived to predict the height of a contour surface, the thickness of the layer from 1000 mb to that surface, and the field of vertical velocity averaged throughout a vertical column. The equations are in a form suitable for numerical integration, and a brief outline of a method of solution is given.
