description abstractThe decline of birth rates in the United States during the 1960's and 1970's has lead to subsequent declines in the enrollment of students in public schools during the 1980's. In response, many public school systems have been forced to consolidate their systems, resulting in the closing of school facilities. A systematic method is proposed to generate consolidation alternatives that are a reflection of the various objectives and requirements of the school system and community. A discussion of possible objectives, constraints, and appropriate solution methods is provided, along with the results of an actual case study.
