description abstractAmong the most difficult challenges faced by transportation agencies in the last 25 years relates to informing the public so that opposition to proposed projects is kept to a minimum. This paper examines the methods used by several agencies around the country to inform the public about a variety of environmentally sensitive projects. Those factors which tend to produce positive results are identified, as well as some which do not work well. Lastly, the paper identifies principles and makes recommendations for agencies to use in meeting their public involvement responsibilities.
