description abstractAn approach is developed to determine the area bounded by irregular curves. Points of maximum and minimum deviations from the datum together with points of curvature inflections are determined in the field and offsets to these points are measured. Two simple formulas are derived to calculate the area in orthogonal and polar coordinate systems. Practical applications show that this technique gives higher accuracy than the conventional methods where offsets are taken at equal intercepts. The field work is also reduced appreciably. The new approach can be used in levelling for cross section, profile, and earth work surveys. Also, it can be used for area calculation of ponds, lakes, and properties of curved boundaries.
