description abstractTheoretical analysis of flow through side slots is presented as a special case of spatially varied flow. Frictional head loss in the parent channel over the length of the slot is ignored. The channel is also assumed to have a negligible slope. Two flow situations are analyzed:free‐surface flow in the parent channel and pressure flow. Simple algebraic solutions are obtained for nearly frictionless flows and nearly horizontal channels. These simplifications are valid for relatively short side slots (as in sewers). Application of the given solutions is illustrated through three numerical examples.
