description abstractThe application of a mathematical model developed by the writer to fluidization of filter media is presented. An assemblage of spheres having a rhombic arrangement with spacing between particle centers adjusted according to the observed porosity, is taken as a model to study fluidization. Using two coefficients, the model considers the effects of angularity and the degree of packing of the bed. The physical properties of some common filter materials have been presented and their influences upon the fluidization behavior of the media are expressed in terms of these coefficients.
