description abstractA live-load survey was carried out on several building offices in Mexico City. The results are used to estimate the probability distribution function of the maximum total loads for different influence areas over a 50-year return period. The mean values of these loads are compared with the specifications of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and with those of the Federal District Mexican Building Code. The probabilities of exceedance of nominal values recommended in these codes are drastically different. The results of this study serve to propose a new load-reducing rule for the Mexican code.
