description abstractAn object‐oriented finite element modeling approach is presented for solution of complex engineering systems. For efficient processing of a myriad of data types generated in such analyses an object‐oriented enhanced entity relationship (EER) data model is developed. A class library is created for performing object‐oriented finite element analysis in C++. These classes model the basic concepts and tools needed for finite element analysis of engineering problems. As an example, the models and class library developed in this research are applied to interlaminar stress analysis of composite structures. This research lays the foundation for development of a new generation of highly modular, reusable, and easily maintainable finite element software systems.
