description abstractIn recent years, progress has been made in the shape optimization of arch dams in China for static and dynamic loads. The paper proposes rational and practical mathematical models and a series of effective methods of solution such as the internal force expansion method, the exponential transformation of design variables, and the methods for analyzing the stresses and stress sensitivities of an arch dam under static and dynamic loads. Special effort was made to apply this new technique to practical projects. Methods of mathematical programming were used to determine the optimum shapes of about 30 arch dams, which resulted in considerable reduction of dam concrete and higher speed of design. The writers were awarded the National Prize of Technical Progress of China for this research. The mathematical models, the methods of solution, and some examples of application to practical arch dams are presented in this paper.
