description abstractDesign values for bolted timber joints are empirically based on research conducted over 50 years ago. The analytical and experimental results of this study confirm that the previous recommendations are still valid. The analytical method used in this study, the European yield theory, explains much of the observed behavior of bolted timber joints and can be used for material properties not included in the original research. It also incorporates the effect of bolt yield stress, which is not considered in current design.
