description abstractLower‐bound limit analysis solutions for collapse loads have been developed for concrete slabs with the loads transmitted through circular contacts at the interior, near the edge, at the edge, or at the corner, assuming rigidplastic behavior and square yield criterion of failure. The extent of the failure zone around the load has been determined by a statistical analysis of many laboratory and field‐test data. Existence of a ring shear at the boundary arising from the satisfaction of conditions on moments has been established and accounted for in the analysis. Approximate solutions based on a moment reduction approach have been obtained for cases other than the interior loading case. The collapse loads, thus obtained, are found to compare well with the available upper‐bound solutions.
