description abstractBased on the “collapse load” analysis, a method is developed to predict the ultimate strength of a reinforced concrete beam that contains a large rectangular opening and is subjected to a point load. According to the method, the distribution of external shear between the chord members and the collapse load of the beam depends not only on the cross‐sectional properties, but also on the size and location of the opening. Test results available in the literature are compared with the theoretical predictions. A good agreement between the theory and experimental results is obtained.
