description abstractA mechanism for use in the limit analysis of steel frames where yielding arises in webs of members from couples of closely spaced forces is developed. This mechanism, called the shear hinge, is based upon the shearmoment interaction of the short portion of beam bounded by the couple. Conditions necessary to achieve the limit load are examined. Examples illustrating the analysis and indicating applications for eccentrically braced frames and column panel zone yielding are given.
