description abstractA canal automation algorithm named CLIS has been further developed and evaluated using test cases set by the ASCE Task Committee on Canal Automation Algorithms. The control algorithm is based on an inverse solution method of the Saint Venant equations. It is designed for the automation of demand oriented systems, and is able to take into account both scheduled and unscheduled changes in offtake discharge. A target water level is maintained at the downstream end of each pool by measuring two water levels in each pool, one at its upstream end and the other at its downstream end. No flow rates need to be measured. According to the specifications of the ASCE task committee, it has been tested for a steep and a flat canal, under tuned and untuned conditions. The results indicate that the proposed control algorithm is rather effective and robust.
