description abstractA study of the rectangular hydraulic jump downstream of low‐head irrigation structures is the main goal of this research. The phenomenon is investigated on a rough channel bed under different flow conditions to obtain the optimum length of roughness from both the hydraulic and the economic point of view. Experiments are conducted in the hydraulic laboratory at Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. Statistical methods are used to analyze the experimental data and render practical equations required for the optimum roughness length in order to describe the obtained characteristics of a hydraulic jump using cubic roughness, which occupies 10% of the bed surface. Momentum equation in the direction of flow is used to get a general formula for the length of jump on a rough bed.
