description abstractThe potential settlement of rockfill has been related to the gradation of the rockfill materials being utilized. No data has been published, however, which present criteria to differentiate the characteristics of rockfill of different gradations. Field data presented in this paper indicates that a transition is present from rockfill with most large particles in point-to-point contact to rockfill with most large particles encased in finer material at approximately 20 to 30 percent of the rockfill material passing the #4 sieve.
