| description abstract | A new test has been developed and successfully employed to evaluate the performance of coal freeze-conditioning agents. The new procedure involves the design of a new shear cell which can be used with the standard flow factor tester used for powders. Coal samples at two moisture levels, 10 percent and 6.5 percent, at a subfreezing temperature, −14°C, with four conditioning agents, were evaluated. Results indicated that Union Carbide’s WINTER-FLO 103 Coal Aid was the most effective freeze-conditioning agent available. An inexpensive portable tester has been developed based on this new method. Such a tester will be capable of predicting the degree of coal flowability in the field. | |
