description abstractIn the design of rotating machinery, it is often necessary to project design changes in order to modify the system torsional natural frequencies. For damped systems, there are additional questions regarding the change in modal decay rates associated with a parameter change. This paper provides a simple, easily implemented procedure to calculate the derivatives of the complex eigenvalue for the damped torsional system when the eigensolution is known.
