description abstractAn alternative formulation of plasticity is discussed in which strain rather than stress serves as the independent variable. The relationship of the formulation to traditional plasticity is examined for cases of both single and multiple loading surfaces. Conditions are given under which the stress and strain-space formulations are equivalent.
