description abstractA modified, circuit-containing drill pipe has been developed which allows instantaneous data transmission from a borehole while drilling. The system sends 600 data samples/second and is capable of much more. Results of the first system field test are reported. System components are described; they include a downhole instrument, a special 3000-ft (900-m) drill string, a slip/ring, kelly assembly, uphole readout, and special cleaning equipment.
