description abstractThe effect of a gust parallel to the main stream on a nonlifting airfoil of finite thickness is studied for incompressible flow. General expressions are developed for the resultant unsteady flow field using thin airfoil theory. The pressure perturbation induced on an elliptic airfoil by such a convected “streamwise” gust is examined in detail, and is compared with that involved in the unsteady lift response of a flat plate at incidence in the same gust.
