description abstractA linear model of a bolted joint subject to alternating tension is directly correlated with a modified Goodman diagram. It is shown that bolt preload can have a beneficial or adverse effect. The optimal value is determined by the minimal clamping force. The rigid flange plus elastic bolt is shown to be of advantage in all circumstances.
