description abstractIn this paper, a finite element for a cracked prismatic beam is developed. This element may be used in any matrix structural analysis. This paper details the derivation of the interpolation functions for a cracked Timoshenko beam finite element. These shape functions for rotational and translational displacements are also used to develop the consistent mass matrix for the cracked beam element. The crack effect on the stiffness matrix, as well as on the consistent mass matrix, is investigated and graphically represented.
