Abstract: Research into the decision‐making process has raised the question as to why most managers do not adhere to the normative or rational model in practice. This paper reviews two empirical studies of variations in the decision‐making process, and then explores the possibility that time pressure is an explanation for decision process variation. The effects of both general and selective time pressures upon managers' ability to follow the normative model are considered. The implications of time pressure on the decision‐making process are also examined, and potential remedies to help reduce its negative effects are discussed.
