| description abstract | Projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics are cited to highlight the shortfall in the number of engineers who will be available to fill positions that will open up in the future. This shortage argues powerfully for drawing on the talents and abilities of those traditionally underrepresented in the field. Data are presented to show that underrepresented minorities are much less likely to have the science background necessary to enter and succeed in engineering school. The role of women in engineering is also discussed, with figures presented to show the level of participation. It is noted that although girls in high school are as well prepared as boys to enter engineering school, too few choose to do so. | |
