description abstractThe concept of managing diversity is first defined. The Socratic method is used in explaining how managing diversity differs from affirmative action. The way in which programs to value differences fit in with efforts to manage diversity is also discussed. The notion that benefits to one group will come only at the expense of another is firmly controverted. Attention is also given to the question whether managing diversity is fully consistent with a meritocracy. Finally, methods are suggested for gauging the success achieved in managing diversity.
