description abstractASCE, the Institution of Civil Engineers, and the Canadian Society for Civil Engineers held joint professional discussions September 26–30, 1993, in London. The theme of the 1993 Joint Triennial Conference was “Urban Regeneration and the Environmental Challenge.” This is a summary of three very important papers presented at session 1 of the conference: (1) “Urban Regeneration and the Environmental Challenge”; (2) “The Environmental Challenge for Engineers”; and (3) “The Environmental Challenge for Engineers—A Hong Kong Perspective.” The conclusions derived from these presentations are that societal expectations about the environment vary widely around the world, and the interest in the environment will not go away. The World Engineering Partnership for Sustainable Development has been formed to provide leadership, develop constructive relationships, coordinate projects and programs, and work closely with public and private decision makers. We must achieve harmony between man and nature. The engineering profession has both the responsibility and the potential to meet the environmental challenges and solve them.
