description abstractAbstract. One of the many contributions of Professor Ward Winer to tribology was his insistence that constitutive equations for liquid lubricants have a basis in empirical fact. He was awarded the 1986 Tribology Gold Medal in part for his contribution to high pressure rheology. It is therefore appropriate that one of the misunderstandings of rheology applied to tribology be addressed on the occasion of this memorial to Ward Winer.
