description abstractA microcomputer‐based software system SCAAD (an acronym for structural computer analysis and design) for the analysis and design of columns, beams, and frames based on the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) specification of the American Institute of Steel Construction is developed. The system automates the design of columns, beams, and frames through the use of a menu‐driven user‐friendly analysis and design software. To minimize errors in input, all input data are echoed and displayed in a tabulated or graphical format on the output screens. The program is coded in QuickBASIC and can be executed conveniently on any personal computers. For the design of frames, a second‐order analysis is performed on the structure to obtain the required member flexural strength. The nonlinear analysis is carried out using the work‐control iterative method. The selection of the appropriate sections is based on the minimum weight criterion. The section with the least weight satisfying the strength requirement is selected by an automated section selection scheme.
