description abstractRecent enhancements in microcomputer spreadsheet software allow engineers to write programs easily in order to solve iterative problems of considerable complexity. Command and function macros on macro‐spreadsheets provide the necessary tools to tackle problems that cannot be solved using a conventional spreadsheet. A program written to solve the well drawdown problem by use of the Theis method illustrates the basic concepts of macro‐spreadsheet programming and provides a basis for the solution of other engineering problems. The macro‐spreadsheet runs like a normal uncompiled Basic or FORTRAN program, interacting with the user to create a stand‐alone conventional spreadsheet into which the data is entered and the problem is solved. User interaction during program operation, complete visual layout of the problem, use of user‐defined and built‐in functions, and ease of application typify the power of macro‐spreadsheets.
