description abstractThe modified friction circle method is still an important tool in slope-stability investigations. The theoretical soundness of this method was investigated, and it is shown here that there is theoretical inconsistency and that the radius of the friction circle is incorrect. Using fundamental relationships of classical mechanics, the exact solution is derived from first principles.
