description abstractLaboratory experiments duplicating the tornadic phenomenon in which small projectiles are driven into various objects such as posts or trees have established the penetration of straws and splinters into various kinds of wood as a function of their speed. Speeds as low as 30 m s?1 are sufficient to stick splinters into soft-wood targets. Much higher speeds are required to stick into hardwood or to penetrate into softwood more than a centimeter.
