description abstractThe monochromatic ?exchange-between-layers? model of the infrared radiative heat exchanges of an atmosphere (Green, 1967) has been applied to the whole thermal infrared spectrum for model atmospheres as used in the Mintz-Arakawa GCM. It is shown that although the radiative heat exchanges within the atmosphere itself are never negligible, they may be parameterized by correcting the sum of the ?exchange-with-boundaries? terms without appreciably reducing the accuracy of the computed cooling rate profiles. Similar parameterizations may be carried out for other temperature and humidity profiles as used in the different numerical models of the general circulation. The reduction in computation time by the possible parameterization of the interior heat exchanges for each numerical model of the atmosphere is quite large. Because of this reduction, there is no need to simplify the transmission function or make other time-saving approximations that may reduce the accuracy of the radiative cooling.
