description abstractEvaporation and transpiration are estimated from routine climatological observations using a conceptual model that requires no assumptions concerning the availability of water. The versatility of this unorthodox approach is demonstrated by comparing model and water budget estimates for 118 river basins in Canada, Ireland and the southern United States.
