description abstractThe achievement of a high degree of accuracy in gas temperature measurement has been a problem in many investigations. The theory of such measurement is presented together with an analysis of a device known as the Radiation Compensating Thermocouple, which is designed to cancel out errors from the radiation environment inherent in other systems of measurement. The mathematical concepts and results of experimental work are included. Results of tests provided data on the errors of air temperature measurement with single thermocouples used without shields and proved that carefully fabricated Radiation Compensated Thermocouples measure the true air temperature with very small errors.
